"There are really only two types of music; Soulful and Soulless, and I’ve spent my life in a relentless pursuit of the former.”

About Paul Hutchison

I have had a love affair with music for as long as I can remember. Some of my first memories are listening to music in the car with my mother on the way to daycare. Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Wonder & Billy Joel were some of my earliest favorites, and their beautiful melodies are forever burned into my memory.

When I was 8 years old, I saved up enough money to buy my first two records, Thriller by Michael Jackson and Rio by Duran Duran. At age 11, after being entranced by the magic of Eddie Van Halen, I begged my mother for guitar lessons. I soon began weekly lessons with a local teacher named Eric Golding. A few years later I began to write my own instrumental music showcasing the guitar in an ensemble setting. At 15 years old, I added bass guitar to my repertoire and started experimenting in jazz as well as learning about the late great James Jamerson & Jaco Pastorius. Shortly after, I began to pursue classical and flamenco guitar and began lessons on the piano.

At the age of 20, I joined the Award Winning Canadian Recording Artist, Johannes Linstead and began to record on his albums as well as touring the US and Canada. After attending the University of Toronto, I moved from my hometown of Toronto, Canada to Birmingham, Alabama adding voice, drums, mandolin, and banjo to my skill set.

I’ve never stopped learning and continue to further my education so I can be as creative and knowledgeable of a musician as possible. One of the most wonderful things about music is that it is found in so many places in life; from television, to the gas station, to the grocery store, music is everywhere! There are so many avenues, genres, and workplaces for a musician to explore. That being said, my three favorite things in the world of music are performing, composing, and teaching, because all stem from a need and desire to create and share music with others.

My influences are now as varied as the stars in the sky, but as a wise man once said, there are really only two types of music; Soulful and Soulless, and I’ve spent my life in a relentless pursuit of the former.
